Fascinating Stories from Our National Parks

Do you know…

how many locations there are in the National Park Service—and their different designations?

there’s a park where taking a bath is a common activity?

who the first park rangers were?

what American wars are—and aren’t—covered by national park sites?

how is George Takei, Sulu on the original Star Trek television series, associated with the national parks?

These are just a few of the questions I pose in a quiz I hand out to attendees as they arrive for my program, “Fascinating Stories from Our National Parks.” This gets them thinking about the breadth of our park system, that the sites not only showcase our country’s beautiful scenery, but also relate our history.

In my hour-long PowerPoint presentation, I provide the answers plus many more intriguing facts about our parks, incorporating over 50 photos, handouts and audience interaction. I also offer my book, Life Lessons from the National Parks: Meeting God in America’s Most Glorious Places, for sale at the conclusion.

In addition to my book, I’ve written several articles about our parks, and was the first Artist in Residence at Homestead National Monument of America, a unit of the park service.

Over 80 libraries, senior residences and community groups have hosted “Fascinating Stories from Our National Parks”:
